Temptation of Jesus
Matthew 4:1-11
Words that are highlighted have a definition at the bottom

Shortly after Jesus had been baptized by John the Baptist,
Jesus was led into the wilderness.

Matthew 4:1-11

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.

NOTE:  John 8:44 says that the Devil is a murder and he speaks lies and is the father of  lies.

After fasting forty days and forty nights,
he was hungry.

Satan comes to Jesus to tempt Him.

The tempter (Satan) came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God,
tell these stones to become bread."

Jesus answered, "It is written: `Man does not live on bread alone,
but on every word that comes from the mouth of God."

Satan tempts Jesus to jump off the temple.

Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple.
"If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down.  For it is written:

" `He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone."

Jesus uses God's Word against Satan

Jesus answered him, "It is also written: `Do not put the Lord your God to the test."

Satan tempts Jesus by offering  Him all the
kingdoms if Jesus will only worship Satan.

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor.
"All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me."

Jesus uses God's Word against Satan again.

Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: `Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only."

Satan left

Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

After the devil finished tempting Jesus, then the angels came to help Him, but Jesus never gave in to Satan (the devil).

NOTE:  The temptations were real.  He did not pretend to be tempted.   By resisting the temptation to sin, Jesus showed  that He was qualified to be our Saviour.  Satan was attacking Jesus and His Divine nature when he asked Him to jump off the temple.  He was using trickery to get him to listen to Satan and do wrong.  Satan also tried to appeal to Jesus by offering Him kingdoms and glory to get Him to worship Satan.  But this was wrong and Jesus didn't give into Satan.  When we are tempted to do wrong, we can use God's Word to resist the Devil and  sin (evil, what is wrong).  Satan will also use worldly things to get us away from worshiing God.  God is not pleased when we put worldly things before Him.  He wants us to put Him first in our lives.

DEVIL -- (Greek) Slanderer.  The enemy of God and all that is good.  His character is evil.  He is also called Satan, The wicked one, Murderer, A liar, Ruler of this world, Serpent of old, The deceiver, and many other names.
TEMPTED --  To be persuaded to do something wrong by promise of getting something of pleasure or gaining.  Just being tempted is not wrong.  It only becomes wrong  when we go ahead and do the thing we are being tempted to do.
WORSHIP  -- To bow down to in adoration.  To show respect toward God or an object.  To honor.
