Genesis 37:1-36

Jacob lived in the land of Canaan. God had changed his name to Israel (Genesis 35:10). Israel had a son named Joseph who he loved more then his other children because he was a son born to him in his old age.

Genesis 37: 1-3

Joseph had a dream and told his brothers that in his dream they were binding sheaves (bundles of wheat) in the field and that Joseph's sheaf (bundle) rose and stood up and the brothers sheaves (bundles) bowed down to his sheaf (bundle).
His brothers said to him, "Shall you indeed reign (rule) over us? Or shall you indeed have dominion over us:'  So they hated him more for his dreams and words.

Genesis 37: 5-8

Joseph has another dream about
the sun, moon, and stars.

Joseph had another dream that the sun, moon, and stars were bowing to him.  He told his father and brothers about the dream.  His father asked him what he had dreamed.  He asked Joseph if  his  mother, his brothers, and him would bow down to the earth before him some day.  His brothers envied him after this.

Then Joseph's brothers went out to feed the flock in Shechem.  Then, Joseph's father, Israel, sent Joseph out to check on his brothers and the flock.

When Joseph's brothers saw him coming they planned how to kill him and said, "Here comes the dreamer."

Genesis 37:12-19

Joseph's brothers put him in a pit.

His brothers decided to kill Joseph and put him in a pit and leave him there and say that a wild beast had eaten him.  But his brother Rueben said to them not to shed his blood but to just put him in the pit so he could bring him back to his father.
So, when Joseph came to them, they took off his coat of many colors and put him into the pit with no water.

Genesis 37:20-24

Joseph's brothers see a caravan coming.

Then his brothers sat down to eat and saw a caravan of Ishmaelites that were going to Egypt to trade their spices, balm, and myrrh. Judah spoke up and said, "What profit is there if we kill our brother and conceal (hide) his blood. Come and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and let not our hand be upon him, for he is our brother and our flesh." His brothers listened and they pulled Joseph out of the pit and sold him to the Ishmaelites for 20 shekels of silver. So Joseph went to Egypt.

Genesis 37:25- 28

Rueben returned to the pit and saw that Joseph was gone and he tore his clothes.  He returned to his brothers and said, "The lad is no more; and I, where shall I go?" So they took Joseph's coat, killed a goat, and dipped the coat in its blood.

His sons and daughters tried to comfort him but he wept.

Genesis 37:32-36

So, the brothers planned to killJoseph but changed their minds and ended up selling Joseph to a caravan of traders. Joseph was also a dreamer and God uses Joseph in a muchbigger way later .
