John the Baptist and the Baptism of Jesus
Matthew 3:1-17 and Luke 3:1-15

John the Baptist prepares the way.
John was Jesus's cousin.

In the days when John the Baptist came, preaching in the Desert of Judea, he told the people to Repent, for the kingdom of heaven was near.  The prophet Isaiah had spoken of him in Isaiah 40:3

John's clothes were made of camel's hair, and he wore a leather belt.  He ate locusts and wild honey.
In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea,
and during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert.   John went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.

John preaches to the people to repent

John spoke to the crowds that were coming to be baptized by him, warning them to flee from the anger that was coming.  He told them that they needed to show their repentance.
When they heard John speak they asked him what they should do?  John told them to share with those who have nothing.

John  baptized many people
in the Jordan River.

Tax collectors also came to be baptized.  They asked him also what should they do?   He told the tax collectors not to collect any more than they were required to.  Then some soldiers asked him what should they should do?
People came to him from Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region of the Jordan.  They confessed their sins, and were baptized by him in the Jordan River.

When John saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he asked them who had warned them to flee the anger that was coming.  He told them to produce fruit in keeping with repentance.  In other words, they had to show that they were repentant of their sins.
John told them that he bapized them with water for repentance, but after him would come someone who was more powerful than he was who he wasn't even worthy of carrying His sandals.
He would baptize with spirit and with fire.  He would gather those that were His and burn up those that were left over in a fire that could not be put out.

Jesus comes to John.

Jesus asks John to baptize Him.

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.  But John tried to discourage him telling Him that he needed to be baptized by Jesus, instead of Jesus.

John baptizes Jesus

Jesus said, "Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. " Then John went ahead and baptized Him.

Jesus comes out of the water.
A dove comes down from heaven.

As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water.   At that moment heaven was opened,
and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him.

A voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased

  Then Jesus walked on.

Repent  --Means to change your mind to do what is right.

Baptized -- Means to immerse (submerge or bury) in water.

Righteousness -- Means to be right with God.

CONCLUSION:  John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus.  He taught the people about repentance for the forgiveness of their sins.  He baptized many people and then Jesus also came to him to be baptized.  Jesus was without sin so his baptism was to fullfill all righteousness, which means he had to do what was right and also be an example for us to follow.  It was part of God's plan that God's son, Jesus, would come to earth to save us from our sins.
