Jesus Cleanses the Temple

Matthew 21:12-14; Mark 11:15-17; Luke 19:45-46

Jesus went into the temple of God to worship.

The people were selling gift offerings there.

Jesus didn't like what they were doing in the temple of the Lord, so he turned over the tables and seats of those taking the money and drove out everyone who was buying and selling in the temple.  Jesus would not let anyone carry what they were selling through the temple.

Jesus said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you have made it a 'den of thieves.'"  After this, Jesus healed those who came into the  temple and were blind or couldn't walk.

CONCLUSION:  If Christ came today, would He find us practicing things in the church or worship service that He would not approve?  Jesus did not like it when the Jews sold things in the temple.  They were selling things and probably charging more for them then they should.  So, Jesus compared them to thiefs.  He told them that the temple was to be a house of prayer.  Should we also be careful and not make the church a place to sell things?  When we come to worship service, we should make it a time for the Lord, to praise Him, listen to His Word, to pray, and to give to His church.  If we want to sell something, we should do it outside of the worship service.
