As Jacob slept there, he had a dream.  In his dream, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven.  On the ladder the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.  The LORD stood above it and spoke.  He told him that he was the LORD God of Abraham and the God of Isaac.  He also told him that the land on which he was lying He would  give to him and his descendants.  Also his descendants would be as the dust of the earth and spread from the west and to the east, to the north and the south.  Through him and his family all the families of the earth would be blessed.
The LORD also told him that He was with him always and would bring him back to this land.

Genesis 28:16-18

When Jacob woke up from his sleep he realized that the LORD was in that place.  He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place!     Jacob called the name of that place Bethel.  The  city had been called Luz before that.  Then Jacob made a vow.   If God was with him and kept him going, gave him bread to eat, clothing, and brought him back to his father's house in peace, then the LORD would be his God.  Jacob had set up the stone as a pillar to be God's house.  Jacob also decided that all God gave him, he would give a tenth back to God.

CONCLUSION:   Rebekah  knew that Esau was angry with Jacob because he had bought his birthright but also recieved  the blessing from his father Isaac.  Esau being the oldest son was suppose to recieve his father's blessing.  Esau wanted to kill Jacob.  So, Rebekah told Jacob to go to Haran and find a wife.  She was protecting her sons in this way from hurting each other.  Isaac also told Jacob to not take a wife from the land of Canaan but to take a wife from one of Laban's daughters.  At this time the Canaanites did not serve God.  Isaac wanted him to find a wife that believed in and trusted God.  As Jacob travelled to Haran, he stopped to sleep.  He used a stone as a pillow and after he fell asleep, he had a dream about angels going up and down a ladder.  The Lord spoke to Jacob in the dream and told him that the land he was on would be given to his descendants.  He gave Jacob the same promise that He had given to Abraham and Isaac.  He also told him that He would be with him wherever he went.  Now Jacob knew that God was with him and had given him many promises.  He was not afraid anymore because God was with him.  Jacob named the place where the Lord had spoken to him, Bethel.  Bethel means House of God.
