The Great Healer

Matthew 8:1-4  and Mark 1:40-45
(Highlighted words have a definition below)

A man with leprosy asks Jesus to
make him clean.

When Jesus had come down from a mountainside, many people followed him.  A man with a skin disease called leprosy came before Him and said, "Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean."

A person with leprosy often lived in a cave.

A person with leprosy was driven from the city.  A cave was his home.  He saw his family only from a distance.  As the disease progresses, it badly disfigures its victims.  In Jesus' time there was no cure for the disease.  People wanted to avoid getting the disease, so there were many rules about what lepers could and could not do.

Jesus touches the man and cures his leprosy.

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.  The man was willing and Jesus said to him, "Be clean!"  Immediately he was cured of his leprosy.

The man was happy that he was cured.

Then Jesus told him not to tell anyone, but he could go and show himself to the priest and as a testimony, offer the gift Moses commanded.
One of the duties of the priests were to examine sick people and quarantine, or isolate, them if necessary to keep the disease from spreading.  If a person recovered, the priests could examine him or her again and end the quarantine.

The man was so excited he couldn't keep
silent about Jesus and how He cured him.

The man who was cured of his leprosy was so happy that he was cured that he told everyone, and Jesus' fame spread.  How do you think you would feel if you had leprosy and then you were suddenly cured ot it?

CONCLUSION:  Jesus healed a lot of sick people and those with diseases.  By His power to heal people He showed everyone that He truly was the Son of God.  Jesus also showed us that He cares for us too.  We should be thankful for our health and if we find ourselves sick or come down with a disease, we can receive help and strength when we need it through prayer.
