DICTIONARY

S


SABBATH:  The seventh day of the week.  The day of rest and worship observed by the Jews.

SACRIFICE:  The act of offering something precious to God or a god.  To give up for the sake of something else.

SADDUCEES:  A member of one of the religious parties which existed among the Jews in the days of our Lord. They acknowledged only the written Law as binding.

SALVATION:  To be saved.  To be delivered from danger or evil especially from death.  (Separation from God)

SAMARITANS:  Was a person from the area of Samaria in Palestine.  Samaria was between Galilee and Judea.  These people were only part Jewish, so the Jews did not accept them.  They hated the Samaritans.  But Jesus showed love and concern for the Samaritans.  (Luke 10:30-37; John 4:1-42)

SATAN: An adversary, opponent, the chief of fallen spirits.  The Devil.

SAVIOR:  One who saves from danger, destruction.  A deliver from sin and Death, Jesus.

SAVORY: Delicious.  Tasty.

SCRIBE: A person who copies manuscripts.  Official writer of scriptures.

SERPENT:  A snake.

SERVE:  To work through or perform a term of service.  To help others.

SELFISH:  Taking care of oneself without thinking of others.

SHEPHERD:  One who tends sheep.

SHOW BREAD:  Unleavened bread placed in the Tabernacle that was part of the Jewish worship.

SIMON, THE ZEALOT:  One of the 12 apostles.  (Matthew 10:4)

SIN:  Breaking God's Laws.  disobeying God.  Doing wrong.

SINNER:  A person who sins.  A person who disobeys God.

SLAY:  To kill.

SLEW:  Killed.

SMOTE:  Hit hard.  Killed.

SOJOURN:  To live at a place for a time.

SPIRIT: The spiritual part of man.

STATURE:  The quality or status gained by growth, development, or achievement.

STEAL:  To take something that belongs to someone else without their permission.

SUBTLE:  Sly.  Deceitful.

SWADDLING CLOTHES:  Narrow strips of cloth wrapped around an infant to restrict movement.

SYNAGOGUE:  A house of worship or Jewish congregation.
