Cain and Abel
Genesis 4:1-17
Words in yellow have a definition at the end of the story.

Adam and Eve had two sons.

Adam's wife, Eve,  bore  a son named Cain, and said, "I have gotten a man from the LORD."   Then she bore another son, this time his brother Abel.

Now Abel was a keeper of sheep,
but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in time Cain brought an offering of the fruit of the ground to the LORD.   Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat.  And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering:

God did not respect Cain's offering,
and Cain became very angry.

but He did not respect Cain and his offering.  And Cain became angry, and his countenance fell.   So the LORD said to Cain, "Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen?   "If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it."

So, Cain killed his brother.

Cain talked with Abel his brother, but one day when they were in the field,  Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.

Then the LORD said to Cain, "Where is Abel thy brother?"

He said, "I know not.  Am I my brother's keeper?"

God speaks to Cain and
gives him his punishment.

God asked Cain what he had done.  Because the voice of his brother's blood was crying out to the LORD from the ground.   So God cursed  Cain from the earth, which had opened its mouth to receive his brother's blood.   God also told Cain that when he prepares the ground to plant, it shall no longer produce a strong crop.  Cain would be a fugitive and a vagabond on the earth.
Cain thought his punishment was too much to bear and that anyone who finds him might kill him.

The Lord set a mark on Cain,
and Cain left his home.

The LORD told Cain that whoever kills Cain, vengeance would be taken on him sevenfold (seven times). Then the LORD set a mark on Cain, fearing that someone finding him would kill him.   Then Cain left the presence of the LORD and lived in the land of Nod just to the east of Eden.
And Cain's wife bore Enoch.  And he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son; Enoch.
