Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, with his wife and
everything he had, and Lot went with him. Abram had become very
rich because he had a lot of livestock, silver, and
gold.
Abram
went from
place to place until he arrived at Bethel where he had first built an
altar. There Abram called on the name of
the LORD.
Lot also had a lot
of flocks, herds, and tents.
Abram and
Lot had so many possessions that the land could not support them as
long as they stayed together. And quarreling broke out
between Abram's herdsmen and the herdsmen
of Lot. The Canaanites and Perizzites were also living in the
land at
that time.
So Abram told Lot that they shouldn't be quarrling and that they should
part company. Abram told Lot that if he chose to go to the left,
he would go to the
right; if he chose to go to the right, he would go to the left.
Lot looked and saw
how well watered the whole plain of the Jordan was.
So, Lot
chose for
himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set
out toward the east. So, Abram and Lot parted company:
Abram lived in the
land
of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched
his tents near Sodom. The
men
of Sodom were wicked and were sinning
greatly against the LORD.
The LORD spoke to
Abram after Lot had parted from him and told him to look north and
south, east and west. All the land that he saw the LORD
would give to him and his
offspring forever. The LORD would would make his offspring
like the dust
of the earth, so that
if anyone could count the dust, then his offspring could be
counted. God told Abram to walk through the whole land, for
the LORD was
giving Abram this land.
So Abram moved his
tents and
went to live near the great trees of Mamre at Hebron, where he built an
altar to the LORD.
