   Abraham and Isaac
Genesis 21:1- 22:19

When Abraham was one hundred years old he and Sarah had a baby boy just as God had promised.
How happy they were. Their very own son! God had kept His promise!

The LORD had promised that Sarah would have a boby boy, and Sarah and Abraham had a son in their old age just as the Lord had promised.  Abraham called the name of his son Isaac.
God had commanded Abraham to circumcise his son Isaac when he was eight days old, and Abraham did as God had commanded him.
Abraham was one hundred years old when Isaac was born.

But one day God spoke to Abraham.
He wanted him to take his son
and offer him as a burnt offering.

After some time had passed, God tested Abraham, and called to him.  Abraham listened to God.  God then told Abraham to take his son Isaac, who he loved very much, and to go to the land of Moriah.  God told Abraham to offer his son as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which God would tell him.

Abraham took Isaac to Moriah.
This must of been very hard for Abraham
to do because he loved his son Isaac.

Abraham got up early in the morning and saddled his donkey.  He  took Isaac and two of his young men with him.  Abraham took some  wood for the burnt offering, and went to the place that God had told him.

On the third day Abraham took Isaac with
him to worship (sacrifice a lamb to) God.

After three days of travelling, Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off.  Abraham told the young men that were with them to stay with the donkey while Abraham and Isaac went to  worship.
So Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and had Isaac his son carry it. Then he took the fire in his hand, a knife, and they both went up on the mountain.  But Isaac asked his father where the lamb for the burnt offering was.  Abraham told him that God would provide the lamb for the burnt offering."

Abraham laid Isaac on the altar as a
sacrifice to God as He had told him.
Then an angel of the Lord called him to stop.

When they came to the place which God had told him,  Abraham built an altar there.  He placed the wood on the altar and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood.  Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.  But the Angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said, "Abraham, Abraham!" Abraham answered Him.  The angel told him not to lay a hand on him or do anything to him for now He knew that Abraham  feared God, because he had not withheld his only son from the Lord.

Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a thicket (bush).
God had provided him with a sacrofice.

Then Abraham looked behind him and he saw  a ram caught in a bush by its horns.  So Abraham took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.  Abraham called the name of the place, The-LORD-Will-Provide.
Then the Angel of the LORD called out of heaven a sceond time.  The LORD blessed Abraham and told him that his descendants would multiply as the stars of the heaven and as the sand on the seashore, and in his seed all nations of the earth would be blessed.  The LORD made these promises because Abraham had obeyed the LORD'S voice.

Abraham must of been happy that he
didn't have to sacrifice his son.

Abraham and Isaac then returned to his men, and they went together to Beersheba where he stayed.

Abraham had faith that God would fulfill His promise and he obedyed God no matter how hard it was.  God was testing Abraham's faith when He asked him to offer his own son Isaac as a burnt offering.  Abraham put God first in his life and obeyed God.  Abraham loved Isaac very much and it must of been very hard for him to do.  Some ways we might have to do to put God first in our lives are to go to worship on Sundays even if we have to miss something else.  Giving up bad friendships that take us away from following God and also giving up bad habits that do not please God.

Tested----------To be examined or tried to see what you will do.

Burnt offering---Something offered to God on an altar that is burned.  This was the Old Testament way to worship God.

Worship----The act of paying honor to a god.  To bow down to a god.  Examples of worship today are praying, giving, hearing God's Word, and singing praises to God.

Sacrifice---To give up something for the sake of something else.  A burnt offering could also be a sacrifice.
