The Death of Jesus

Matthew 27:27-66; 28:1-20

A crown of thorns was put on Jesus

Soldiers took Jesus and stripped Him of His clothes and put a scarlet robe on Him and a twisted crown of thorns on His head.  They put a reed in His right hand.  Then they took the reed from His hand and bowed before Him and made fun of Him.  They then spit on Him and struck Him on the head with the reed.  After they were done mocking Him, they took off the robe and put His own clothes back on Him.

Jesus carried His own cross.

He was led away to be crucified.  He carried His cross part of the way, but a man named Simon was made to carry His cross the rest of the way to the place called Golgotha, that is the place of a skull.

Jesus was crucified on the cross.

Jesus was given sour wine before they crucified Him.  He would not drink it.  Then they crucified Him and divided His clothing by casting lots.  The soldiers sat down and watched over Him.  A sign was placed above His head that read "This is Jesus the king of the Jews."  It was written in three different languages.  Two robbers were also crucified with Him.  They were placed one on each side of Him.  People passed by them and made fun of Jesus.  The chief priests, elders, and scribes also made fun of Him.  Even the robbers made fun of Him.

Jesus died on the cross.  One of the soldiers said,
"Truly this was the Son of God!"

From the sixth hour to the ninth hour there was darkness over the land.  Jesus cried out to God, and some of the people heard Him.   They thought He was calling for Elijah.   They offered Him more sour wine.  Some of the people wanted to see if Elijah would come and save Him.  Jesus cried out again and He died and His Spirit left Him.  Then, the veil in the temple tore from top to the bottom.  There was an earthquake and rocks were split.  Many bodies of those who had been asleep (dead) came out of their graves later, after Jesus resurrection and many saw them.
So, when one of the guards and those with him saw what had happened, they became afraid and said, "Truly this was the Son of God!"

Jesus body was put in a tomb after His death.

When evening came, a rich man named Joseph from Arimathea came and asked Pilate for Jesus' body.  Joseph then took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.  Joseph took Jesus' body to a new tomb he had prepared and put Him in it.

Joseph rolled a large stone in front of the door

Joseph rolled a large stone in front of the door of the tomb and then he left.  The next day, the priests and the Pharisees got together with Pilate.  They were afraid that someone would come and take the body of Jesus and say that He had risen from the dead.  So, Pilate told them to go ahead and make the tomb secure by placing a guard by it and by putting a seal on the door so they would know if someone had moved the stone.

An angel told Mary that Jesus had risen.

But after the Sabbath day, on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and Jesus' mother Mary, came to see the tomb.  There was a great earthquake and an angel of the Lord came down from heaven.   The angel rolled the stone back from the door and sat on it.  The angel looked like lightning and his clothes were white as snow.  The guards that were there shook because they were afraid.  The angel spoke to the women and said, "Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified.  He is not here; for He has risen, as He said.  Come, see the place where the Lord lay."
The angel then told them to go quickly and tell His disciples that He had risen from the dead, and that He would see them in Galilee.  So the women left and ran and told His disciples that He had risen.

Jesus returned to Heaven.

Jesus appeared to His disciples for forty days.  Jesus spoke to them before He returned to heaven saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.  Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
While His disciples were watching Him, He was taken up and a cloud received Him out of their sight.  Then two men stood by them in white clothing and told them, as they watched Him ascend into heaven,  that Jesus would come again in the same way.
Christians have  hope of seeing Jesus again some day.  He will return in the clouds and take those that belong to Him (Christians) home with Him in heaven.  Isn't that Great!
